One of our favorite fly fishing rods

    1. Determine the type of fish you will be fishing for.

Trout Fishing Tip: If you are going to fish for trout, then a good 5 weight rod would be reasonable for most types of trout. The right fly fishing rod will allow you have enough weight to land the fish, but not too much weight to lose touch and feel.

Smaller trout and small panfish should require nothing more than a 3 or 4 weight rod. Obviously, the larger the fish, the larger weight you’ll want for the rod.

    2. Think of where you’ll use the rod.

Trout Fishing Tip: A rod that is too large for that backwoods stream will hinder your enjoyment and success! Usually, a 9 foot rod is the most desirable. Shorter rods can be purchased for smaller, wooded streams.

For those “old-school” trout fisherman, bamboo rods have a sense of vintage casting style and a slower reflex action.

    3. Decide on a price range you are willing to go with.

While you may not be able to afford the $500+ fly rod – and you don’t have to. A beginner will be as comfortable with the $150 beginner set for at least awhile. Some veteran trout fishers never move past a middle of the road trout fishing combo!

There it is…easy as 1, 2, 3. Well, perhaps it isn’t that easy. Finding the right fly fishing rod isn’t (and shouldn’t be) the easiest thing to do – but hopefully, with this post, we’ve helped you make a good decision for your trout fishing habit.
